Choosing a content marketing focus for 1 month straight

Let’s talk about focus. I always thought of myself as someone who’s focused.

✅ Got straight A’s. (Until college. 🙃 Then only in my major because I actually cared about those classes.)

✅ Varsity athlete who *never* looked at the crowd for validation.

✅ Ambitious young worker on a mission to get as much experience as possible.

But as a business owner, I’ve struggled with focus.

I never felt like a visionary until I became an entrepreneur and all of a sudden I wanted to launch ALL the things for ALL the people using ALL the skills. (I know you know that energy. ✨)

During a recent catch-up call with a business friend, she told me: “I love your honest IG stories, but they’re all over the place. I wouldn’t know how to work with you because you mention so many ways so often.”

At first, I was a little defensive.

But then I realized she’s right.

Nothing To Lose

Social media has never “converted” for me.

It’s been amazing for me to connect with other conscious and caring online service providers. But it’s not like people are DMing me on the daily (or ever) asking where they can sign up to work with me.

So I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving my content more focus.

***Important to note: Intention is one of my core values, so focus can absolutely be a way to live out this value.

Focusing My Content

For October, I decided to finally stop resisting Reels. But I wanted to make them on my own terms—zero dancing, lip syncing, skits, or pointing.

I also decided to talk exclusively about brand messaging strategy(Barring a couple posts I already had slated that I wanted to see the light of day.)

Why? Because values-aligned brand messaging strategy is what I want to be known for. It’s my favorite way to work with clients because it’s all-encompassing and sets them up for success in every area of their business. And it’s something I could riff off of infinitely.

Moving Forward

Honestly, I still don’t have people storming my DMs wanting to work with me. And my in-the-moment off-the-cuff stories are still a bit scattered.

But as the creator, I did feel more clear and less frazzled this past month. And I felt more anchored in my expertise because I’m constantly thinking of fresh ways to talk about the same thing.

And this makes sense.

That’s the same reason taking the time to reflect on your valuesyour audience, and your overarching message gives you clarity and momentum.

When we have a sense of focus to anchor us, our creativity can run wild. We can take confident, meaningful action and show up in a way that feels good.

So in November, I’m doubling down on values-aligned brand messaging Reels. I’m not sure I’ll stick with it forever, but I want to commit to this focus long enough to see if anything changes.

Maybe it’ll attract summit hosts who want me to speak. Maybe it’ll attract referral partners who want me to join in on their projects to make their work easier. And maybe it’ll attract conscious and caring business owners who want to share their brand with ease.

So, let me know how you approach your content—are you hyper-focused all the time, or do you go wherever the inspiration takes you?
