Let’s Get Acquainted

Ashlee Sang photoI’m Ashlee Sang! As your friendly copywriter and communications strategist, I get to know all about your small business or nonprofit. Those details are how I tell your story in a way that resonates with your audience.

So, in the spirit of transparency, I wanted you to give you a chance to get to know me with 10 fun facts about my past and present.

Fun Facts

  1. Almost any comedy sitcom can suck me in. Some of my favorites I’ve re-watched MULTIPLE times include Friends, Parks and Rec, Gilmore Girls, The Office, and New Girl. I sometimes enjoy heavier dramas, but there’s nothing like sitting back and soaking in some good ole’ comedic relief.
  2. I’ve been to 26 countries and 28 US states (as of 2019!). I LOVE to travel, step into someone else’s world, and lose myself walking through a new city’s streets. Travel has been a lot harder recently with more responsibilities and less vacation time, but I was really fortunate to travel in West Africa for work and gets mounds of vacation days while living in Senegal. I kept a casual travel blog for a few years, mostly filled with misadventures.
  3. Thrifting is my jam. I used to find secondhand shopping sort of icky, but between clothing swaps, thrift stores, and Facebook Marketplace, most of my clothes and home furnishings are pre-owned. I shop secondhand primarily for environmental reasons—there is SO much already in our world that someone doesn’t want, but someone else could use and love—but also because it’s such a budget-friendly solution.
  4. I’m an only child, but when I first meet people, they often assume I have a little brother. I’ll take that as a compliment.
  5. My husband and I speak a mottled mix of French, English, and his native Wolof in all our conversations. Our text messages are a complete mess by all standards of any language’s grammar system. We get looks everywhere we go because people are trying to figure out what we’re saying. And we wouldn’t have it any other way!
  6. I have a tree nut allergy, but I’m a fan of virtually anything with peanuts. (Which are technically legumes, like beans.) I always say baked goods will be the death of me because I find them so hard to resist and they’re so often secretly full of nuts. (Pet peeve: I ALWAYS ask if there are nuts and most the time the person just guesses “no” without bothering to look into it. I’ve had one nut-related ER visit, which I have no intention of repeating.)
  7. For me, time as an undergraduate was all about exploration. Wash U had a really loose prerequisite system (no math for me since junior year of high school!), so I signed up for courses that called to me. On a whim, I found my way to the Anthropology department, loved it, and paired that major with minors in Linguistics and French. Because I crammed in so many classes that interested me and studied abroad twice, I accidentally finished my coursework a semester early. (TBD if I pursue a Master’s—I’m currently contemplating an MBA or a degree in Communications.)
  8. I prefer to live an “analog-plus” lifestyle. For example, I like reading books on paper, writing notes by hand, and making scrapbooks over digital photo albums. I don’t stay entirely in the dark ages though—I pair my notebook to-do lists with phone reminders, and I like tackling new technological tools when I know they can improve my life or business. For me, it’s all about that happy medium.
  9. Growing up, I played a lot of sports. At a young age, I tried cheerleading (a short-lived stint as I’m not gymnastically or rhythmically gifted). Like most kids, I played soccer for YEARS and never became good—I ended up in defense, the position requiring the second-least amount of running, with less pressure than being goalie. With karate, I actually got pretty skilled (even won a couple medals, woo!), but I quit shortly after having the wind knocked out of me and crying in front of my grandpa. The only sport I ever really mastered was volleyball. (Yep, the summer camps, the personal training, the year-round leagues, the works.) I thought seriously about pursuing the game in college (at least DIII), but I ended up choosing Wash U for its academics and culture, then played club volleyball there. I still play in co-ed leagues around town!
  10. My philosophy: life is meant to be lived in full color. (Case in point: my vibrant business logo.) My clothes represent every color of the rainbow. We have a lime green guest room, three bright red walls in my office, and a sky blue entryway because the previous owners of our house were color-curious too and we just left the paint how we found it. But one thing I’ll never experiment with: my hair color. For some reason, I just prefer its natural brown hue!

Now it’s your turn!

Relationship-building is all about exchange. Let me know what we have in common or what aspects of my life are wayyy outside your  comfort zone.
